EAGLE TIMES

TROOP 80 *** BSA *** MAY 2005

Volume 22, Number 2

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We had great weather for our March camp at Camp Haynes. All the snow was gone and there was not very much mud. Flip and Stan ran the rappelling hill, with a little help from Tristun, Casey and Ben. Jake only went over the edge with a rope. Fajitas Saturday night, with a few leftovers on Sunday. All patrols cooked cherry cobbler (Mohawks had the best ) . Cherokees finished with best campsite. Sleeping with wool blankets and ponchos turned out to be rather cold. Saturday night was 30 degrees, so everyone picked up a few degree points. Ben’s dog had a great time, maybe better than Ben. A Coke on the way home finished off a good weekend.

Everyone made it into Sneed Ranch (no Hite miles) in April. The bridge was out , but otherwise a great camp. We had great weather on Saturday and all got back before it rained. Competition in the Mini-Camporee was heated and all played fair and hard. Garry Wood cooked up a great meal for Saturday evening (which has become traditional) . We are all looking forward to next year! Mohawk Patrol won the Mini-Camporee (Austin Fielding, Patrol Leader) and the Cherokees were second.

May’s trip down the Arkansas River in Colorado was the best rafting trip in years. Water was high, but not too cold. CJ did not get cold. DG rode his bike all around and did not get lost. Food was great , thanks to Duane Glasco and Paul Kiefer and the KP’s. We even made it back early, and should have come in at or under budget. Many thanks to Rick Thamer for advance preparations. Marshall Cutright had an " interesting" ride with KM. Can’t wait to go next year.

Water Polo Champs ThreePeat !!!

The Cherokee Patrol stormed to the championship 3-0 over the outmanned the Shoshone Patrol. This is the 3rd win in a row. The previous wins were under the Blackfeet name while back in B Squad. Congrats also to the Shoshone for getting to the finals as a new boy patrol.

Work Day: Great show of scouts and parents to help clean up the lot and equipment sheds. We still have a lot of work to do to get ready for the Reunion, but this was an outstanding start.

Skills Night: Many thanks to all the parents who came and watched their sons compete and who helped eat the food prepared by Johnny Wood. Thanks to Marshall Cutright for the use of the cooker. The Cherokee Patrol won the skills competition, followed by the Mohawks and Shoshone.

ALUMNI I N THE NEWS

Jim Altsman has received three awards of recognition from the Amarillo Emergency Service, for hundreds of hours of volunteer service (571 hours in 2004, to be exact, for one of the awards) . Of course, the AES comes second, so you can imagine how many hours the Troop takes. Jim was also recognized for 36 years of service and 35 years of safe driving (which is always a year behind the years of service) . Way to go Jim!

If you know of a scout who is doing something out side his regular Troop 80 activities, please let us know and we will run a story on him in the next newsletter.
