xmastree.gifTREE LOT

The “Tree Lot” is in full swing. This is how the Troop makes the money to put on such a great program. You should have received a mail-out of when your shifts are and when to work. Your cooperation in selling trees is greatly appreciated. If you have a conflict, call Jeanetta Smiley to reschedule. Many thanks to those who helped set up the two lots.

ORDER OF THE ARROW

A grand time was had at the annual “Fall Fellowship” held at WTAMU on November 14th. Members were given the new official OA Lodge flap to wear on their uniforms.

The elections were short and so were the meetings giving more time at the Activities center to play basketball, racquetball, swim, or just play cards. We have a new Lodge Chief and the date for the make-up “Ordeal” was announced. The scouts that were voted in from 80 that have not gone through their “Ordeal” will be contacted later.

NOVEMBER CAMP

boat.gif

The camp out was at Lonesome Cedar. Instead of riding off into the sunset, some of our more enterprising scouts decided to launch the troop’s inland navy. Well, it sank without a trace. A salvage effort was attempted. Other than that, everyone had a good time, especially since the scoutmaster wasn’t there. There is no camp out in December because of the tree sales.

PARTY TIME

santa.gif

The Committee Christmas bash is set for December 12 at 7pm. The place is the Jim Thompson “Pad” and a wild time will be had by all those that attend. Jim puts on a huge feed and the gifts will be exchanged. All members of the troop’s committee (basically all the adult leaders) are encouraged to attend

VENTURE TRIP

mountain.gif

The Ventures and a few men (old enough to know better) went climbing in the lower Sandia’s near the city of Albuquerque. Everyone made it up the climbs and no one ended up as a story in a newspaper there by falling off a cliff.

OCTOBER CAMP OUT

The Troop took a great hike in the Pecos Wilderness (12 whole miles) through golden aspen and camped at over 10,000 feet near Stewart Lake. One of our fine scouts decided to test the ability of Troop 80 to find lost scouts, but he found out that we were up to the task. The lungs of ST even survived, just barely.

OUTSTANDING PATROL

All point totals are being held in strictest confidence until they are announced at the Father/Son banquet.

FATHER/S ON BANQUET

The annual Father/Son banquet will be December 8, at a special time of 6:30 pm. The cost is just $7.00 dollars per person and tickets need to be purchased in advance. All scouts are invited to attend. The guest speaker will be Wayne Beigle of DPS fame. The winners of the patrol competitions and individual honors will be announced. We hope to see you there!!!!

NEWEST EAGLES

eagle.gif

Our troop now has two new Eagles to add their pictures to the “Wall of Honor”. Casey Carruth and Dane Stalcup both earned enough merit badges and completed their Eagle Projects to receive Scouting’s highest honor. This just might set a record for the number of Eagles in one year for our troop. Good work scouts!! Don’t forget all those changes coming next year for the requirements for Eagle from the guys at National.

DECEMBER RECIPE

   Cowboy Soup

cookout.gif

1 can new Potatoes

1 can peas

1 lb ground beef

1 can green beans

1 med onion

1 can baked beans

 Chili powder

1 can tomato soup

1 can corn

1 can tomatoes

 salt and pepper

Brown ground beef and onion together. Add all except seasonings. Do not drain vegetables. Cook until potatoes are done. Add seasonings and cook 30 minutes. Can be cooked in a large pot or a Dutch oven with a few coals.

We used to call this a “Hobo “ dinner as each scout in the Patrol brought one can of vegetables and the Patrol brought the meat. You can add or remove the ingredients as needed to customize your soup. It’s pretty good on a cold camp out.

ANNUAL SWIM MEET

And the winners are... In a stunning one man show, Randall Waddell wins the swim meet for the Apache Patrol. The Mohican Patrol wins the relay race. The meet was held at the Maverick Club on Nov. 24 Individual winners were Randall Waddell in the free style, Trevor Kos in the breast stroke, and Michael Kiefer in the back stroke. Many thanks to all the parents that came and watched, and to TS and Amarillo Custom Trophies for the trophies.

WINTER CAMP

The BSA District “Winter Camp” will be held at Camp Don on the 15 - 17 of January. The cost for this camp is $25 dollars and registration is from December 5 - 23 at the Scout office. This is a merit badge camp where you could earn up to 5 merit badges. This camp is not sponsored by Troop 80, but our world famous cook staff of PK and TS will be shoveling the grub.

ELECTION TIME

vote.gif

By the time you receive this news letter, the troop should have a new SPL. The patrol leader elections will be held on the first Tuesday in January, which happens to fall on the 5th. You have to be a Star Scout to run for this office. PL counts as an office for Eagle.

HELPFUL CAMPING TIPS

When using public camp grounds, a tuba on your table will keep the campsites on either side vacant.

Lint from your naval can be a fire starter. Warning: Remove lint from the naval before applying the match.

When camping, always wear a long sleeve shirt so that you have some place to wipe your nose.

In an emergency, a drawstring from your parka can be used to strangle a snoring tent mate.

SPOOK-O-REE

The weather was fantastic and the cub scouts had a wonderful time. Many thanks to all the leaders and scouts that came down to Camp Don and spend their weekend working with the Webelos. Those that worked the Spook House had a really scary time in the “Maze” that TSlade built in the mess hall. We are all ready planing a bigger and scarier “Maze” next year. Hopefully, all our work will pay off in a lot of Webelos joining our troop in the near future.

COUNCIL/DISTRICT

Upcoming events on the big boy’s calendar include training for our leaders in the way of “Scout Masters Fundamentals” and “Wood Badge”. Scout “Round Table” is always the second Thursday of the month and the Council Eagle recognition banquet is set for February 6. Winter camp sign-up is under way. For more information about these and other up coming events, contact the Scout Office at 358-6500.
