JANUARY BIRTHDAYS
Here are the birthdays for the month with their dates: Andrew Perkins 2, Mel Gibson 3, Stephen Alexander 4, Evan Branum 7, Kenny Loggins 8, David Wetzel 9, AJ Foyt 16, Nick Worley 17, Rhett Amburn 20, Buzz Aldrin 20, Linda Blair 22, David Alexander 26, Wayne Gretsky 26, Tom Selleck 29, Cole Amburn 29, Slater Ebeling 29, Grant Snider 30, and our own Scout Master, Eric Wolfram was born on the 31st.
IT’S PARTY TIME The Thompsons sure know how to throw a party with lots of Christmas cheer. Good food and somebody said the cider was spiced. Ted got some trout socks, the pink pig and the “Bud” lizard got along just fine. The HOT items seemed to be a cool stuffed reindeer that danced or a multi-tool wrench. Randy was real happy with his special new knife and the Prozac box was a real hoot, I think. We hope to see you committee folks back for more fun next year.

FATHER/SON BANQUET
Over 100 people enjoyed the singing of Bill Rice and Pat Clark. The speaker was Wayne Beighle and he had some great stories. Food was really good and many thanks to James Kone for putting it all together. The Girl Scouts covered the tree lot so the guys could go to the banquet.
The R.T. Abrahamson “Outstanding Scout” award went to Josh Smiley. The Jack Bryant “Leadership” award was presented to John Filipowicz and the “Duct Tape” award went to Drew Skipworth. The Apache Patrol won the “Duty, Honor, Courage” trophy with Randall Waddell as patrol leader.
VENTURE PROGRAM
National BSA has changed the venture program, which may cause the troop to restructure its venture program. We will be notifying our scouts and parents of the new structure of our program after the changes are made. Keep an eye out in this paper for further updates.
NEW SENIOR OFFICERS
New youth leaders were voted into office recently at a committee meeting. Blaine Thompson was elected as the new SPL for 1999. Blaine will be replacing John Filipowicz, who did a great job for the troop in ‘98. Danny Finley was elected as ASPL-1. The following scouts were also elected: Adam Cox ASPL-A, Branden Naylor ASPL-B, Kyle Watson ASPL-C, and Brent Naylor ASPL-D. Congrats to these scouts for stepping forward into some very tough leadership positions.
JANUARY RECIPE
POT-O-CHILI
1 lb ground beef
1 lg yellow onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbs cumin
2 tbs chili powder
1 tbs Worcestershire sauce
1 (20oz) can tomatoes,
1 green bell pepper, chopped
salt ; pepper to taste
1 lb uncooked kidney beans
Cover beans with 2"-3" water. Bring to boil, remove from heat and let stand 1 hour. Drain and set aside. Brown ground beef with onion and garlic. Add remaining ingredients. Cover and simmer about 1 hour. Variations: Use black beans instead of kidney beans. Really good on a cold camp out or any time.
COUNCIL/DISTRICT
Upcoming events on the big boy’s calendar include training for our leaders in the way of “Scout Masters Fundamentals” and “Wood Badge”. Scout “Round Table” is always the second Thursday of the month and the Council Eagle recognition banquet is set for February 6. For more information about these and other up coming events, contact the Scout Office at 358-6500.
UNSUNG HEROES
Troop 80 has many men that work a lot of hours behind the scene to make our program a success for the scouts. Two of these men, Jim Altsman and Chip Palmer, work in the advancement office each week to record the ranks and merit badges earned by our scouts. They are also responsible for turning all the advancement to the scout office and then seeing to it that the earned badges are awarded to the scouts at each CoH. This is a very time consuming and rather thankless job ( we usually only notice when we don’t get that badge). On behalf of Troop 80, I wish to thank these men for their efforts which are appreciated by those who know how the system works. In the future, I will discuss other members of the troop’s committee who contribute “Behind the scenes”. FMW
TREE LOT
Many thanks to all the scouts and parents who gave up their time to help with tree operations. The lots looked good this year and we look forward to working with you next year. The lots are a lot of work, but that is how we pay for the building and buses that we use and the fine program. A super special thanks goes out to Flip for buying and pricing trees and Skip for coordinating the money. Top salesman and top patrol for sales will be announced at a later date.
ELECTIONS
The troop will be holding Patrol Leader elections on January 5, 1999. A scout must be a Star to run for these offices and some patrols will be re-aligned to match changes during the past year.
RANK REQUIREMENTS
Effective as of 1/1/99, some requirements for the ranks have changed for the lower ranks and Eagle required merit badges. Tenderfoot, 2nd Class, and 1st Class requirements will be printed up and handed out to squad leaders and scouts who are not yet 1st Class scout. New scout hand books were sold out at the scout office and more have been ordered. Keep your old book handy because most of the information is the same. Cut off date to advance under the old system is 4/1/99, or April Fools Day. Go figure.
DUES ARE DUE
How much does it cost to be a scout in Troop 80? Last year it was only $25. The 1999 dues have not been set by the committee yet, but they will still be due and payable by the end of February. Stay current and pay your dues on time.
UNPAID ACCOUNTS
Would you believe that some of our scouts still owe money for dues and camps from 1998? A Scout is Thrifty..... These fees need to be paid in the next 30 days. Advancement can and will be denied until these old accounts are paid. You can help and your cooperation in this matter is appreciated.
POPPE MUSEUM
New exhibits are being set up on a regular basis. There is now a window dedicated to Cubbing. The Poppe tie slides are now displayed on the east wall, thanks to Bob Wieck. David Thurston is completing a case on the west wall and Carl Johnson is working on another case as well.
UP-COMING CAMPS
Troop 80 will be going to “Chicken Creek” for the January camp out on the weekend of 1/16-17. This is a patrol cooking camp. Start planning now for the famous “Snow Camp” in February. We will have more dates as they become available.
ORDER OF THE ARROW
The make-up “Ordeal” date will be published soon for all those elected 80 members unable to attend last summer. New officers were elected and our own Cherokee Chapter is planning a busy year for our members. A special OA camp out may be planned and of course we will do a few projects at Camp Don.
NEW EAGLES
One more scout was able to complete the road to Eagle in 1998. Chris Wingate achieved his Eagle, so that means he will be driving soon. His project included finding blankets and coats for the Tyler Street Center. This has been one really great year for Eagles in Troop 80. Chris will be recognized at the next CoH. Congratulations to all our eagles from 1998.
Song of the Bird
A man found an eagle's egg and put it in a nest of a barnyard hen. The eagle hatched with the brood of chicks and grew up with them. All his life, the eagle did what the barnyard chicks did, thinking he was a barnyard chicken. He scratched the earth for worms and insects. He clucked and cackled. And he would thrash his wings and fly a few feet in the air.
Years passed and the eagle grew very old. One day he saw a magnificent bird above him in the cloudless sky. It glided in graceful majesty among powerful wind currents, with scarcely a beat of its strong golden wings. The old eagle looked up in awe. "Who's that?" he asked. "That's the eagle, the king of the birds," said his neighbor. "He belongs to the sky. We belong to the earth - we're chickens." So the eagle lived and died a chicken, for that's what he thought he was.
