RAFT TRIP. (By James Savage) Good trip and good rafting. The water level was only about 375-400 CFM – peak is over 3000 CFM, but some pretty good rapids. The rafting company was great – professional, courteous, and the guides were fun people to be around. I didn’t hear any complaints about any of the guides. Two of them were college graduates who aren’t quite ready for the 9 to 5 gig.

You know that 1 ½ hours from Pueblo to the rafting place? Try 2 ½ hours– over 70 miles past Canon City. Almost to Buena Vista. As we were approaching Canon City, I finally took a close look at the map and started noticing things that said “50 miles to Salida” then “12 miles to this” and then an unascertainable distance to the little square where the rafting company was. We had not fueled the bus Friday night thinking we had enough fuel. We stopped in Canon City to fuel. We left the gym before 7, got to the rafting place after 10. This was, however, the only hitch of the trip. Had a good time in the gym, the scouts were good at the restaurant and worked hard to clean up the gym.

PHILADELPHIA SCOUT COUNCIL UPDATE

Several weeks ago the Philadelphia Scout Council adopted a policy which had the effect of no longer prohibiting homosexuals from working with scouts. The national news media reported two other councils had earlier done the same. In fact, all three councils have reversed their positions, and continued to stand behind the traditional BSA policy, constitutionally protected, of the right of free association. BSA is a group of voluntarily associated people who believe that homosexuality is immoral and a bad influence on boys. Homosexuals are free to disagree, but may not join in a private group as a matter of right that opposes their views. They are free, however, to set up their own youth organizations which utilize homosexual adult leaders, if they choose, and which, in a free society is their right.
