WILDERNESS CAMP

campfire.gif

The best camp in scouting history is just a month away. Troop 80's “Wilderness 98" will be held from July 18th through July 25th in the mountains just North of Red River, New Mexico. All it takes to go is 5 camp outs, 25 meetings, for you to advance one rank (or 5 merit badges), and a low, low price of $65.00. The week will be full of chances for you to earn lots of merit badges.

A softball tournament and other games will be played. No expense has been spared for the food and kitchen staff. The menu is already in the works and a planned trip to Sante Fe on Friday will add to the fun of the entire week.

A few adventurous scouts and leaders will be hiking the back country. Wheeler Peak is their goal and this hike is only for those older scouts that have been cleared by Dr. Banks.

TRADING POST

The Museum Trading Post is now open. They have cups, patches, water bottles, and 80 Wear for sale at the trading post. The post will be open at all troop meetings. Come by and take a look. Mugs are only $5.00 and patches are $3.00.

UNITED WAY

If you give to the United Way, you may designate Eighty Scouts, Inc. To receive the donation. Eighty Scouts, Inc. Is the sponsor for our troop. They forward the donation into the trust fund. Several thousands of dollars have already been donated by parents and leaders through this program.

POP CORN RESULTS

The results are in and the big winners are those scouts that sold the corn. The TOP seller was Jared Slaughter with $367 sold with $110 towards camps. Prizes will be awarded sometime this summer.

MAY CAMP OUT

The Watson camp was a great success. All scouts made it into camp without getting lost this time. You take your wins where you can win them. A whole lota fishin’ going on. No tractors were stuck this time. The Mohicans had a fun detail (Don’t ask). JS and company had a good time and the late night steaks were awesome. Thanks JT!!!!!!!

NEWEST 80 EAGLE

bsamedal.gif  Kyle Lynch has completed all his requirements for his Eagle Badge. Congratulations go out to Kyle and his family. Michael Slade has earned his third Eagle Palm. A scout earns an Eagle Palm for each additional 5 merit badges after he earns his Eagle. Matt Hite still holds the record for most merit badges with 69, but it may fall this year.

POPPE MUSEUM

John Abrahamson has donated his Eagle paraphernalia to the museum, along with his merit badge sash and lower rank items. Come by and see an Eagle award that is more than 50 years old.

OLD UNIFORMS

Have you outgrown that old uniform shirt or are your scout shorts a little tight in the seat? You can donate those old uniform parts to the troop used uniform closet. Anybody can use a uniform from the closet as long as you return it when you outgrow it. We also have a pretty good supply of hiking boots for those that need to use them.

WHAT DID YOU DO?

basketb1.gif

Luke Austin won first place in the District JV track meet in the Long Jump with 20 ft 4 ins. Luke is a student at Tascosa. Michael Slade has won three first place and a third place medal in AAU basketball tournaments in Amarillo, Hereford, and Lubbock. Brent Naylor was presented the “J P Dial Award” for high average at Sam Houston Middle school. He had a 98.82 grade point average.

What have you done out side of scouting that you should be recognized for, like your church or school? Call the editor at 355-1777 and let him know so that we can let the troop know.

CAMP PHYSICALS

tent.gif   When did you go see the Doctor for your last camp physical? Well that’s too long! A current physical is required by the BSA before you can go on an extended summer camp and this includes our own Troop 80's “Wilderness Camp ‘98". Your time is running out, so check at the next meeting to bring yours up to date.

JUNE RECIPE

cook-out.gif  Fried oatmeal patties. Follow directions to make oatmeal. Let the oatmeal set for a while until it becomes a solid mass. Cut the mass into cakes and fry them in butter. After browning each side, remove and top with sugar, syrup, and fruit to taste. Yum Yum!!!

DON CAMP STAFFERS

Seven scouts and two leaders from Troop 80 are working as staff members at the Council’s summer camp in June. First time staffers are Branden Naylor, Brent Naylor, and Michael Slade . Second year staffers are David Alexander, Daniel Scott and Abel Wilson. Josh Wainscott is even coming back from Winsor, Colorado to work on staff at Camp Don Harrington. Matt Hite is the “Program Director’ and Kevin Brown is the “Aquatics Director”.

NEW CHAMPIONS

trophy.gif The Chickasaw Patrol took the water by storm and won the Water Polo Championship for ‘98. The Maverick club was the place and the teams fought hard until the winner was decided.

BSA CHANGES PART 2

The BSA will make a few changes effective February of 1999 starting with a new and improved Scout book. More cooking requirements will be added to Second Class and the swimming requirements will be changed a little to match the Swimming merit badge for both Second Class and First Class ranks.

persfit.gif

The Personal Fitness merit badge will now be required for Eagle and the Safety merit badge will no longer be required. The Venture and Explorer programs will change the most. Stay tuned as these are all preliminary changes and you will have 90 days once the changes take place. A new Scout Master’s book is also in the works and they may change the scout uniform shorts, yet again.

Let There Be Peace

A wise old gentleman retired and purchased a modest home near a junior high school. He spent the first few weeks of his retirement in peace and contentment . . . then a new school year began. The very next afternoon three young boys, full of youthful, after-school enthusiasm, came down his street, beating merrily on every trash can they encountered. The crashing percussion continued day after day, until finally the wise old man decided it was time to take some action.

The next afternoon, he walked out to meet the young percussionists as they banged their way down the street. Stopping them, he said, "You kids are a lot of fun. I like to see you express your exuberance like that. Used to do the same thing when I was your age. Will you do me a favor? I'll give you each a dollar if you'll promise to come around every day and do your thing."

The kids were elated and continued to do a bang-up job on the trash cans. After a few days, the old-timer greeted the kids again, but this time he had a sad smile on his face. "This recession's really putting a big dent in my income," he told them. "From now on, I'll only be able to pay you 50 cents to beat on the cans." The noisemakers were obviously displeased, but they did accept his offer and continued their afternoon ruckus.

A few days later, the wily retiree approached them again as they drummed their way down the street. "Look," he said, "I haven't received my Social Security check yet, so I'm not going to be able to give you more than 25 cents. Will that be okay?"

"A lousy quarter?" the drum leader exclaimed. "If you think we're going to waste our time, beating these cans around for a quarter, you're nuts! No way, mister. We quit!"

And the old man enjoyed peace and serenity for the rest of his days.
