September. Pecos High Country Adventure. Mountains of New Mexico were green and gorgeous! Late fall this year with not much color, but it had been raining and many flowers were in bloom. Hikers all made it (even TE). Hite miles do not count of course. Thanks to the crew at the bottom for cooking the meals and helping the scouts who did not go up the hill. JK’s pack made a special trip. BC and JC did not get in trouble (yes, this is newsworthy). I wonder why CC did not go on this trip.

GILVIN RANCH CAMP OUT. A little shady getting started but a great weekend none the less. Very laid back and relaxing. Adjusted program for depth of boys unable to carry ropes back out of the canyon and for possibility for rainy weather that never materialized. Fires not allowed in patrol sites because of overgrowth but Cooksey/Carnes combo supplied sufficient firewood for the campfire and breakfast cooking the following morning. Two or three new scouts, (new to hiking and camping) did not lash equipment to backpacks and had some trouble. It appeared that while the adults were repacking these boys’ packs that there was an absence of basic personal gear and an abundance of unnecessary items. Seems to indicate a failure to impress upon parents and boys what this experience is really like. Thankfully it only happens two or three time to new scouts before they start to learn. Boys and men worked well together. There was no harassment, difficult personalities, or incidents. And when that happens, a great weekend is generally guaranteed.
