shadow1.gifWILDERNESS CAMP

The week of July 15 - 22 will find the troop in the mountains of Colorado . NOTICE The date has changed and so has the price so please mark your calendar. We will hike over Hunchback Pass in the Weimenuche Wilderness and ride the narrow gauge train. The cost has gone up a little to $125 dollars. The side trip to Mesa Verde had to be dropped because of the cost in favor of more free time in Durango. Forest fires are not where we will be camping and there is no danger.  Academy Sports has a water bottle with a built in filter which is recommended for use in going over the pass. The cost is about $12 plus tax.

scuba.gifSCUBA DIVERS

Our Ventures and leaders went to the Blue Hole over by Santa Rosa, New Mexico and earned open water certifications. Those attending were Jim Thompson, John Banks, Bruce Naylor, John Filipowicz, Blaine Thompson, Branden Naylor, Chas Binkley, Brent Naylor, and Steve Filipowicz.

WATER POLO CHAMPS

The Cree A3 patrol became the 2000 Water Polo champs in a hard fought battle over the Arapaho C3 patrol. They put up a valiant effort, but the Cree won in a 3 - 0 blow-out.

THE MOUNTAIN HIKE

A few brave and hardy souls (24 scouts and 19 men) hiked up to Lake Stewart in the Pecos Wilderness of New Mexico. The trip earned them 12 miles and 16 degrees. Flip fished and actually saw some fish, but didn’t catch any. Nobody got lost, but we came close once. Banks saw the moon rise over the lake. Some rain fell yet nobody got wet. Eric almost got wet and no one really cared. The next hike is “The Pass” at Wilderness Camp.

PHILMONT NEWS

We voted to skip Philmont Family Weekend in September and go to Possum Kingdom Lake. You and your family can still go to Philmont if you want, but you will have to make all your arrangements through the Scout Office.

OUR SCOUTS IN THE NEWS

Chris Abers, former ASPL and 80 Eagle is getting married. 80 Eagle Brandon Wolfram, the son of our SM Eric Wolfram, is also planning a wedding. 80 Eagle Seth Holton tied the knot this summer. Elvis Kiefer, son of Paul Kiefer and 80 Eagle is getting married. Eric Hinton got married and is now headed to Albania on a church mission trip.

Carl Johnson has volunteered to become our Building Super. You see him about keys and he is also the one that rebuilt the roof under the front porch.

We welcome Annette Walker as our new Unit Commissioner. She will be our liaison with the local Scout Council. She can answer all your questions about why they do the things they do and boy am I glad somebody can.

John Filipowicz left for the USCG Academy. Luke Austin was named MVP for the Tascosa track team.

We welcome the Webelos from Pack 29 into the Sioux Patrol with Chris Klein as their Troop Guide.

THE AUGUST FAMILY CAMP

The second annual family camp and re-union at Camp Don Harrington for our parents and scouts is set for August 26 - 27, 2000. Big campfire program and a Bar BQ dinner. Come and swim, canoe, and other fun activities and camp with your sons. See if they really know what they are doing and learning on those many camp outs. We will serve you the Saturday dinner and breakfast on Sunday morning with advance reservations. T-shirts and patches will be sold. A great program on the back porch of the dining hall and we’ll have “the tower” again on the lawn.

badge9.gifCOURT OF HONOR

Attendance has been way down for these troop meetings. This is a special time when the scouts are presented with their awards and rank badges they earned during the year. We also give important information to our parents concerning our up-coming events. Please plan to attend each and every Court of Honor and show your support for your scout.

ADVANCEMENT CAMP STAFFERS

Matt Hite, 11 year staffer with 5 years as Program Director, did a great job again. His 80 crew consisted of Grant Snider and Adam Cox in scoutcraft, Michael Gray in aquatics. The adult volunteers were Tony Kolodzeij in Geology, Annette Walker taught the 1st year Baden-Powell program, Eric Wolfram taught Citizenship in the Nation, James Savage taught Communications, and Randy Reed was the Archery Director. Food problems the whole week and a new Camp Director David Hall were sorta fixed by Tuesday when the Troop showed up for a free swim with watermelons.

CAMP “JENNY CRAIG”

37 scouts and 7 adult leaders successfully completed the week at Camp Don this summer. Over 200 merit badges were earned and no one lost more than 10 pounds in weight. Special thanks to Alan Cox, Ken Copheranham, Tim Enevoldsen, Rich Kritselis, and Randy Reed for bringing down extra food to keep the scouts healthy. “We want food” was the chant for the week. Eric took down ice cream on Wednesday. Many thanks to Matt and his staff for improving the quality of the instruction in the merit badge classes

webelo.gif2000 WEBELOS CAMP

Webelos camp looked like a Troop 80 campout because a lot of the staff was from our ranks. Annette Walker was the Program Director. Jim Thompson and Cindy Thompson ran the pool while Randy Reed ran the BB range and Garry Wood taught outdoorsman. The kitchen was headed by Master-Chef Terry Slade and Michael Slade. Sheri Wood was the camp nurse. Tony Kolodziej taught geology and Tim Enevoldsen taught water sport. It was great to have Steve Tunnell come down and help on the BB range after recovering from his time at the Hospital

Junior staff included Danny Finley in outdoorsman, Chad Dominguez in archery. Blaine Thompson, Randall Waddell, and Michael Gray ran the pool. Christopher Klein in geology and water sports, Jimmy Reed, after a hand injury, manned the treading post, Kenny Reed and William Wood taught geology and knives. Michael Walker did fishing and water sports. Ryan Long taught fishing, Christian Enevoldsen and Trey Wood helped in the water sport areas.

A SCOUTMASTER’S MINUTE "Character is what you do when no one is looking"

The dictionary defines courteous as being polite. The Boy Scout manual says that the fifth point of the Scout Law means that a Scout shows good manners and makes it easier to get along with others. This seems like a very good thing and should be easy to follow. It is one thing to say it and something entirely different to live it in our daily lives. What does courteous mean to you?

Most of the things we learn as youth are from our parents, our school, and our friends. The Scout law is just a bunch of words, unless you believe in them. Just like the Bible is a good history book, unless you truly believe in what it says. I wonder what the word “Courteous” really means to most of us today? Do we understand the meaning or is it no big deal?

A friend of mine took his 7 year old son to his first track meet a few weeks ago. Heck, most of the kids didn’t even know which way to run around the track. The man running the meet takes all the parents aside and tells them that he will not have the same problems from the parents that he had with the group of parents earlier that morning. Seems some boy in a race stepped out of his lane and ran into another boy. No big deal for the two boys. It was a big deal with the two parents. You see, a fight broke out between the parents of the two boys and the police had to be called. The whole fight was over a race by some first graders that would probably have rather been home watching cartoons. Will these boys see the actions of their parents as the true way to behave?

At baseball games in Florida, the parents are required to attend some special training on how to get along with each other before they are allowed in the stands. What does this say about the way we lead and teach by our example? Seems that somebody shot and killed an umpire because they didn’t like the call he made at home plate. One player spit on another because he saw a Major-Leager do the same thing. As Scouts, we must always be aware of others younger than yourself. If they see your bad behavior, they will do as you are doing and not as you say. The Scout Law is more than just a few words that your required to memorize, it should be the way you live your life.

The next time you yell at somebody for cutting you off in traffic or get in a fight over something minor, try and remember what the Scout Law teaches us. Say thank you and please more often. Yes sir sounds better than yea. Hold the door open for your mom and carry out the trash without being asked. Wow!! Being courteous is just like being polite. The next time you repeat the Scout Law, don’t just say the words, but think about what the words really mean. ASM Terry Slade
