ORDER OF THE ARROW

The Order of the Arrow is an honor camping group of scouters that live by the code “Brotherhood of Cheerful Service”. We do projects at the local camps to help get the camps ready for summer. You can find a member by the pocket flap patch on the right pocket. Elections will be held in April for those that meet the requirements. It is an honor to be elected by your Troop and complete the Ordeal. You must be a First class Scout with 15 days and nights of camping, and be nominated by the Scout Master.

WILDERNESS CAMP

kneeling.gifThe date is July 18 -25 and it should be a good one this year. Attendance rules state that 5 camps and 25 meetings with no exceptions to attend. This will be a base camp near Questa with advancement, fun and games, softball, and a world famous 4-Star central kitchen with 2 great chefs for your dining experience.

There will be a 50 mile hike for interested older scouts and adults. See John Banks if you are interested in going on this 50 miler.

New to the camp this year is some free time on Friday in Santa Fe or Albuquerque, subject to final committee decision as to the schedule. Cost should be about $65:00 dollars and this is a pretty good deal for a whole week in the mountains of beautiful New Mexico and Midnight Canyon. Don’t miss out on all this great opportunity.

REPORTERS NEEDED

If you have information for the newsletter, you can send it to the editor by e-mail at tmslade@actx.edu or call 355-1777. We need info from the squad leaders and the scouts as well. Pictures can also be submitted for inclusion.

POP CORN SALES

Troop 80 will be selling the golden stuff once again this year. All profits will go to the Scout just like last year which is about 33% and remember that the money earned can go to any Scout activity. Important dates to remember are:

April 14    Orders must be turned in

May 2       The pop corn arrives

May 13     ALL money is due

ADVANCEMENT CAMP

The “Camp Don” advancement camp is set for June 6 - 12. It starts on Saturday this year and ends on Friday night. Earn merit badges galore. Sign up will start in April. The cost is $110:00 so you need to start saving your money now.. Rich Kritselis has volunteered to be our acting Scout Master again this year. He wants to set a record for total badges.

DUES DUE

To remain a Scout or leader with Troop 80 for another year, you have to pay. Not just one hour a week, but big bucks. For a small payment of only $25:00 dollars which is the same as last year, you get a full year of the best youth program in the world. Dues are due by the end of February. If your reading this now and you have not paid, your late.

MARCH CAMP OUT

The rapellers made it down the hill at Haynes. We all fought the wind. PH made friends with a racoon at 3:30 am in the morning. A little sand in the taco meat builds character. We are still missing the three scouts that fell into a pot hole on the road into camp.

POPPE SCOUT MUSEUM

A new exhibit of hand axes will be on display shortly, courtesy of Wayne Benson. If you have any donations for the museum, contact Bob Wieck or Walter Wolfram.

APRIL CAMP OUT

Sneed Ranch is coming. Be ready for a wild and wooly hike this year as Jim Thompson promises high adventure just getting into the camp. TA and JB are already warming up the dominoes.

bsamedal.gifNEW EAGLES

A big Court of Honor will be taking place in May as Troop 80 adds at least 4 new Eagles to the ranks. Eric Emerine, Nick Emerine, Grant Snell, and Scott Thurman have earned there pictures on the “Wall of Honor”

SCOUTING WINS BIG

The California Supreme Court ruled unanimously on March 23 that the BSA is not a business and does not fall under their antidiscrimination law. The Chief Justice, Ronald George, said that the BSA has the right to exclude homosexuals and those that do not believe in God. Greg Shields, spokesperson for the scouts, praised the ruling. “For 88 years, we have taught the moral values of the Scout oath and law to American boys,” he said.

NEW 80 WEAR

Troop 80 Wear is adding Hot & Cold cups to the line up of items that the scouts can purchase with the distinctive 80 logo. Jim Thompson was showing one at the last camp out. The cost will be $5 dollars and coming soon are the Too Hot To Touch water bottles for just $2 dollars. All the items have the 80 logo.
