kneeling.gifWILDERNESS CAMP

We’re off to Colorado the week of July 15 - 22 for camp. -- NOTICE--- The date has changed so please mark your calendar. We’ll visit Mesa Verde National Monument and Durango. The hike will be over Hunchback Pass in the Weimenuche Wilderness and we’ll ride the narrow gauge train and the cost is $100. The trip will not be repeated for 6 years. You must be at least a Tenderfoot, have advanced in the last year or earned 5 merit badges, and attended ½ the camp outs and ½ the meetings to go. All 80 Eagle Scouts are exempt from any attendance policies and always invited on Troop 80 camps.  Academy Sports has a water bottle with a built in filter which is recommended for use in going over the pass. The cost is about $12 plus tax.

ADVANCEMENT CAMP

Troop 80 Scouts will have the chance for advancement and merit badges when they attend the Golden Spread Council’s Summer Camp the week of June 18 - 24 at Camp Don. The cost is $110 dollars. We will need a few adults willing to spend the week as Scoutmasters at camp. Sign-up at the next CoH.

badge7.gifCOURT OF HONOR

The next CoH is May 16 starting at 7pm with a slide show and the awards ceremony will follow at 7:30pm. We need all parents to attend so that you can find out what is planned for our troop and get that all important information. We need you to be there to support your sons because this is when the scouts are presented with badges and rank advancement. The troop only holds four Courts of Honor each year and they are very important to our scouts.

FAMILY CAMP OUT

Parents and Scouts need to be sure and set aside August 26 - 27, 2000 for the second annual family camp and re-union at Camp Don Harrington. Big campfire program and a Bar BQ dinner. Come and swim, canoe, and other fun activities and camp with your sons. See if they really know what they are doing and learning on those many camp outs. We will even serve you breakfast on Sunday morning.

ORDER OF THE ARROW

We would like to congratulate the scouts that were elected to the Brotherhood of Cheerful Service. Those new members will be attending their Ordeal on August 18 - 19 at Camp MK Brown. The OA, the BSA’s “Fraternity of Honored Campers”, does service projects for the Council camps. You can tell a member of the OA by the patch they wear on their right pocket flap.

badge9.gifNEWEST EAGLES

Aaron Amos, Kevin Tate, David Alexander, and Anthony Kennedy will be presented with their Eagle awards. The ceremony will be held at the May 16 CoH. It looks lake a new record year for the new Eagles of Troop 80. Way to go Scouts!!!

SCOUTS IN THE NEWS

A former 80 Eagle and Kwahadi Dancer is getting hitched. Michael “Seth” Holton is getting married on June 24 at a ceremony in Canyon. Seth is the son of James and Mary Holton. Congratulations!!!!!

Shelby Amos earned his recruiter patch by recruiting Neal McCarty into the Troop. All right Shelby!!!

Our last camp out before Wilderness is a trip to New Mexico on May 19 - 21. Either the Pecos Wilderness or Wheeler Peak, depending on snow conditions.

Kenny Reed is the new Troop Guide for the Hopi Patrol (A1). Stephen Gilbert is the new Troop Guide for the Seminole Patrol (B2).

Special thanks to the “Un-known” parent that baked the cookies for the April camp out. It was unanimous that whoever you are, please keep up the great work.

SNEED RANCH RESULTS

The Comanche Patrol came from behind and won the Mini Camp-o-ree on Sunday, edging out the 2nd place Arapaho Patrol. Third place went to the Apache Patrol. New scouts competing for the first time in the Mini Camp-o-ree were Ben Thamer, Adam Walker, Jarrod Carnes, Luis Rodriguez, and Ryan Carillo. Other new scouts were Orren Sharp, Matt Lincoln, and Jonathan Standish. Great job guys!!!

A CANADIAN ODYSSEY

During the March Committee meeting, the vote was unanimous to take a trip to Boundary Waters canoe area outside Ely, Minnesota during the summer of 2001. This trip would normally cost as much as $800 per attendee, but because of the time we have to advance plan and the dedication of all our membership to this journey, the cost will not exceed $200 dollars. We originally planned this trip for the Ventures only, but after reviewing the performance of our younger members, the decision was made to take everyone that qualifies. Our standard Wilderness attendance rules will apply. We will hold future fund-raisers to help offset the cost.  This will be the trip of a lifetime. You will earn the 50 Miler Award on the water and experience some of the best fishing in the country. You will see nature at its most pristine and most likely not see anyone else for several days as we travel the Minnesota outback by canoe. I would encourage you to start planning now for this trip.

GOING TO AUSTRALIA

Abel Wilson, an 80 Life Scout, was named to the All-State Cross Country team this year. He will be participating in the Down Under International Games in Gold Coast, Australia in July. His team at Stanton High School won First place in District and Regional 2A competition where Abel is competing in the ½ mile, mile, & 2-mile runs. He is also the Band president and a member of the debate team. He says that “Troop 80 helped me to learn to strive for and achieve my goals”.

webelo.gifWEBELOS CAMP

Remember back a few years ago when you spent the weekend at Webelos Camp? The water slide, water bottle rockets, and maybe the first time you went camping? Now that your a Boy Scout, you could go back and be a Counselor as the age has been lowered to 12 years old. Contact Annette Walker for details.

electron.gifMERIT BADGES OFFERED

John Standish is the Counselor for the Electronics merit badge. Contact him if you would like to earn this badge.

cycling.gifCycling became the newest member of those merit badges required for Eagle to go along with Hiking or Swimming. Counselors are Marty Jones and John Standish. Hard to earn, but well worth the trouble.

CAMPING STUFF FOR SALE

I have a Kelty “Yukon” external back pack plus frame and a REI minus-10 degree mummy bag with stuff sack for sale. They are in great shape, but my scouter has outgrown them. I want to sell the whole package for $100. Call 355-1777 for details.

PARKS AND WILDLIFE

If you get a chance, check out the May edition of Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine. There is a great article and pictures of Caprock Canyon. Canoeing on the Rio Grand in Big Bend, camping ideas, and Gourmet Cooking are also written about. Take a look.

We want to recognize the hard work of all our Scouts and leaders. If you know a Troop 80 member that has received an honor at school, church, or other event, please send a note to “tmslade@actx.edu” or 5122 W. 16th Amarillo, TX 79106-4419.

A SCOUTMASTER’S MINUTE

I have been on the “Board of Review” for many of our Scouts and Eagle Scouts. I would like to take this time to say a few things. Some of the Scouts do a fine job of answering the questions and they are in full and complete uniform. Others act as if they are scared to death, didn’t study, and the uniform they are wearing was pulled out of the clothes hamper right before the meeting. You are there to answer a few questions about stuff that you have been learning at meetings and camp outs. No big deal.

An “Eagle Scout Board of Review” is the final Board before becoming an Eagle Scout. There are no questions about CPR, cooking or first aid, and they are not asked to tie any knots. You are asked thinking questions about life, scouting in general, and what are your plans for the future. What they liked and dis-liked about Scouting and we don’t stop there with a short answer, we ask the all important WHY. The Eagle BoR is different from a Rank Board and much more important. We always have a member from the local Council as a visitor on the team. Maybe a few pointers would come in handy that a Scout could use on any “Board of Review”.

First: Make sure your uniform is correct in every manner with badges in the right place. Anything worth doing is worth doing right.

2nd: Know the Law, the Oath, and the Pledge by heart. You look pretty foolish taking the Eagle Board and not knowing the Scout Law. Practice makes perfect.

3rd: Stand up straight and proud. Don’t slouch. Square your shoulder and elbow up when giving the Scout sign. Pull your hands out of your pockets.

4th: Think about your answers. If you don’t understand the question, ask them to repeat it. “What do you mean” sounds a lot better than “I don’t know”.

5th: Speak clearly. Talking in Jive with your friends may make you look cool to them, but it makes you look like a Dope to the members on the Board.

6th: Be polite. Use the words “Yes Sir” and “No Sir” and not “Yep” and “Nope”. You want to sound like a young adult and not a Goof-Ball..

7th: Thank the members of the Board and shake their hands when it’s over. This makes you stand out from the others and ends the Board on a positive note.

Do you know what these suggestions could also be good for? They kind of sound like they could be used on any job interview. Everything we do in Scouting is to prepare you to be a better adult. You learn leadership skills. You earn merit badges so you can maybe find something you like and might decide to pursue for your career. You learn skills to possibly save the life of another and maybe yourself. We will even show you how to fry an egg and make toast. At the least you can eat breakfast.

The Scout motto is to “Be Prepared” and this includes the time you spend in front of those three adults during your Board of Review. Terry Slade
